With a trick, the player bypassed the server shutdown in April 2024 and continued playing Mario Kart 7. But a few days ago, the involuntary end came.
It’s over. Now apparently for good. Back in spring 2024, we reported that a few fans were holding on to old consoles, despite the threat of server shutdowns in April.
Fans around the world found creative ways to continue playing their favorite titles and thus longer than originally planned. But now the presumably last player of the Nintendo 3DS has also disconnected from Mario Kart 7 – but probably not entirely voluntarily.
“Rest in peace, Nintendo Network.”
The player, known as Fishguy6564,continued to play Mario Kart 7 even after the online features of the Wii U and 3DS were shut down. According to the portal Gamesradar, to which he gave an interview in August 2024,, he was the last known player with a server connection.
Using a trick, Fishguy6564 and another player bypassed the shutdown of the servers. Since then, a bot on Fishguy6564’s handheld device has been making lonely rounds. And it did so for 210 days at a time. The handheld device was connected to a power supply and hidden in a cabinet so that no one could touch it.
The headline of the post reads: “That’s it. Rest in peace, Nintendo Network.” The X-account GaffsNotLaffsconfirmed that the handheld has given up the ghost and writes: “We can all go home now”. GaffsNotLaffs runs the Discord server Nintendo Network After Hours and has posted updates on the remaining players since the server shutdown.
After the server shutdowns, a total of eight die-hard fans persevered in various games. One of them even managed to start Pokémon Ultra Sun again after the online services were shut down.
Fishguy6564 had said in August 2024 that his trick would theoretically work forever. The only thing that could stop him was the breakdown of his handheld – and that has now happened.
